For the past year, I've been conducting research in partnership with NYU's Studio 20 program on the viability of the media solopreneur. A trend only accelerated by COVID-19, media solopreneurship has only been increasingly touted as a viable solution for the future.

While this push is being heralded as democratizing creation of the media, we're actually further perpetuating bias and business models that have proven to be flawed.

This toolkit is a crash course on solopreneurship. While this industry, and the tools that fuel it are still largely developing. We're at a key turning point where we can put some stakes in the ground as a guidepost of what to do next.

Through this toolkit, you'll find interviews, tool breakdowns, best practices and common mistakes. You'll also read of parallels of adjacent industries and in conclusion, recommendations to what research demonstrates will create a better economy.

Under the advisement of NYU's Studio 20 program, ran by Jay Rosen and Zoe Fraade-Blanar, I consulted leaders in both tech, journalism, and those bridging these industries to make sure I was gaining an accurate portrayal of what's happening in this space.

This toolkit is targeted to help you no matter where you are in this space: from newbie creator, to seasoned newsroom pro. Whether you're casually scrolling to better understand the ecosystem, or rather working to build a new media outlet of your own—you can find the answers in this toolkit.
